Spring has sprung and it is finally warming up outside. Tulips are popping up and now the trees are beginning to bloom. We love trees for their shade and the oxygen they provide us, but we hate them for their pollen. Here in the mid-west Juniper has already arrived, and we are waiting for his friends Birch, Cottonwood, Maple and Mulberry. Suddenly, you find yourself sneezing with itchy red eyes. You realize that the winter blues has been replaced with the onset of allergy season.
What can you do to overcome your allergies and make it through the season with little to no symptoms?
Health tips to manage your allergies:
- Get tested – know which plants and pollens trigger your allergies.
- Avoid contact – change your clothes after some extended time outside, close your windows, maybe even remove trigger trees and avoid the outdoors on days your symptoms are faring up.
- Control your Pet Dander – no pets in bed, bath with hypo-allergenic shampoo
- Cover up your bedding – dust mites love dark, warm environments, and one of their favoritespots to play house is in pillows and mattresses. To minimize their prevalence, encase both sleep aids with zippered, allergen-proof covers.
- Run a dehumidifier – using a dehumidifier stops mold growth by reducing the moisture content of your air and keeping your home’s overall humidity under control.
Unfortunately, as soon as we think we have survived spring allergy season, then comes grass pollens in the summer and our pets start to shed in the fall.
