An electrocardiogram, also known as EKG or ECG, is a test that observes and analyzes the electrical activity of the heart. An EKG is a non-invasive procedure, allowing you to understand how well your heart is performing.
An EKG test monitors the electrical process and gives you an overview of the health of your heart. The EKG records the electrical impulses that are emitted by the heart and then displays them as trackings or waves on paper for a doctor to review.
Why do an EKG test?
An EKG is a simple, cost effective way to detect a variety of potential heart problems. It is also very fast, with testing complete in less than five minutes in most cases. EKG tests can tell if that patient has a regular heartbeat, has had a heart attack, or if the heartbeat is irregular. Having an EKG test included in routine physical helps doctors establish a baseline for a patient’s electrical heartbeat activity.
Some conditions that electrocardiograms are commonly used to test for are:
- Cardiac stress
- Abnormal heartbeat
- Heart disease
- Chest pain or blood flow problems
